The RTI activists in Uttar Pradesh are up in arms against the state information commissioners (SIC) and are accusing them of holding back information to protect the government's interests. The RTI activists, under the banner of half a dozen organisations, will be holding a demonstration on Sunday to protest against the attitude of the SICs and have even challenged them to an open debate.
According to Sanjay Sharma, who heads the 'Tehreer ' organisation and is a well known RTI activist, said that the state information commission was not acting as a custodian of people's rights. "Instead, the nine SICs who have apparently been appointed for their political loyalties are busy withholding information and protecting the government."
He said that over 55,000 cases were pending with the state information commission which was indicative of the prevailing state of affairs. "There is no guideline for clearing a case within the time frame or even hearing it. This causes great inconvenience and the spirit of the RTI gets demolished," he said.
